ONION LIFE HACKS: HOW TO CHOOSE AND WHERE TO STORE

ONION LIFE HACKS: HOW TO CHOOSE AND WHERE TO STORE

The hero of many riddles and sayings, medicine No. 1 according to adherents of traditional medicine and a product without which it is impossible to imagine any traditional dish of Russian cuisine. Let me introduce: His Majesty the onion ! Today we will talk about how to choose it and where to store it so that the usual onion tears are not mixed with the bitterness of disappointment.

Life hack #1. Keep your eyes open

The first thing you should pay attention to when choosing a bow is its appearance. Feel free to pass by the bulb with leaves: it is already tasteless. Pay attention to the shape of the bulb: if it is slightly elongated (and this is not a feature of the variety), then most likely it will germinate very soon. Choose root crops with husks of uniform color, without spots. The tail should be dry.

Life hack #2. Try it by touch

Take an onion and squeeze. If it does not get through, then there are no "surprises" like a rotten core, you are not in danger. You can safely take it. By the way: a spoiled vegetable can give out not only softness, but also an unpleasant smell. Therefore, if you are in a doubt, check.

Life hack No. 3. Husk is not superfluous

If there is little husk on the bulb (or it is absent), then it is quite possible that the drying conditions were violated. There is such a bow, of course, it is possible, but it is unlikely to be stored. The denser the husk, the more likely it is that even after a few weeks the vegetable will go into a salad or borscht, and not into the trash.

Life hack No. 4. Mesh, tights and coolness

A bow in tights is not only a nostalgic picture from the past, but also quite a modern recommendation. Experts emphasize that onions are best stored in a suspended state so that they do not come into contact with anything. The easiest way to arrange this is with a mesh or ordinary nylon tights (our grandmothers knew what they were doing!). It will be ideal to hang the onion in a cool room: then the husk will not peel off, and the onion will remain fresh longer.

Life hack #5. When stocks are useless

In spring, buying onions for the future is a rather pointless activity, as there is a high possibility that it will germinate quickly. But if the inevitable has already happened, you can unlock another childhood memory and grow a whole plantation of green onions in jars on the windowsill.
